Skill Matrices for Cabinet Production Planning

A skill matrix helps planners see who is qualified for particular operations and where training is needed. It should reflect demonstrated capability and required authorization, not informal impressions. Keep it current as equipment, processes, and responsibilities change.

Build the matrix

  • Define the relevant tasks or stations clearly.
  • Distinguish training, supervised work, independent competence, and any required authorization.
  • Identify who validates each level and what evidence is needed.
  • Review the matrix when people or processes change.

A capacity example

A hypothetical shop has six available workers but only two qualified for a specific finishing process. Planning six people as interchangeable overstates capacity. The matrix makes the skill constraint visible before the schedule is committed.

Use it constructively

Plan coverage and development rather than treating the matrix as a public ranking of people. Include context and a fair path to demonstrate additional competence.

How Millbase can help your shop

Connect the person, workstation, and job

With Millbase QR time tracking, employees use a personal keycard and a shared kiosk to record time against selected work. Worker profiles and labour records let managers review the hours by person, project, and workstation. That gives a shift handoff or capacity discussion a consistent starting point.

Ask the Millbase AI agent a question grounded in your workspace records. For example: “Break down this week’s recorded hours by worker, project, and workstation.” You can select a project or worker, ask follow-up questions, and request supported reports and CSV exports.

Review missing or corrected entries with the team before using the totals. Logged activity provides operational context; it does not independently verify qualifications, attendance policy, or payroll treatment.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

Frequently asked questions

Can a skill matrix replace required certification?

No. It should reference applicable qualifications and authorizations rather than substitute for them.

How often should it be reviewed?

Update it when competence, authorization, equipment, or process requirements change, with periodic checks for stale records.
